The Subsurface is the invisible foundation of our energy system – already supplying more than 80% of the energy we consume, yet still underutilized. Beneath our feet lies the potential for over 100 gigawatts of clean geothermal energy, the sequestration of CO2 and hazardous materials, large-scale energy storage, and the recovery of minerals and materials essential to energy transition and societal development.
The subsurface system operates across scales, with highly coupled hydraulic-thermal-mechanical-chemical processes. Our response is a transformative integration of unprecedented laboratory tools development, combined with field experimentation, multiscale modeling, and data-driven and physics-informed approaches, aimed at the new frontier of subsurface geomechanics.
